Whaddaya know! Comics on computers WORKS! Jan 31, 2008
By M J Heilbron Jr.
"Dr. Mo"
This is my first foray into this sort of thing. Comics on a computer? What about those 12,000 other things I have in boxes all over my office, house and in storage? How could this work at all?
Well, I'll tell ya...pretty darn good.
You're gonna need a decent screen, as every issue is converted into a PDF format. Each image is as if the comic is laid out in front of you, ads and all.
You can manipulate the file as you can any PDF, with zoom, etc. I found a particular zoom size that was pleasing to my eye, and then used my scroll wheel (on my Mighty Mouse) to move around.
I got an odd sense of a combination between a comic and a film. With my eyes reading the words and images, and my finger madly scrolling around, I can't say it was entirely unpleasant...and the more I did it, the more facile I became.
You know how when you read a good book, everything else seems to fade away...you get this sort of Zen thing going on. That started to happen here. There's nothing like the actual, physical, tactile sense of reading...flipping the page, lingering on an image, speeding through breathlessly to see how it ends...that cannot be replaced. Nor should it.
But I got all 54 issues of this entire mega-series on one easily stored disc, and on my 24" screen, the images look, for the most part, awesome.
A few caveats: some of the more advanced printing techniques..ones that create three-dimensional or wash effects on the art...don't come across well. Some of Pat Lee's Iron Man stuff looked messy, but it is because the "effects" added to the artwork, when scanned, "flatten" out.
Also, that big "MARVEL" in the center of the page just sucks. Sometimes it really screws up the simple beauty of a particularly well-drawn image. I know they have to do it to deter the rampant copying that could occur, but really, would anybody go to that much trouble? It would cost a fortune to print out each page...but I quibble.
I have gone on to buy all sorts of these DVDs, complete Spider-Man, Civil War, Iron Man sets...
Now I just have to figure out WHEN I'm going to have the spare seventeen YEARS of time it'll take to get through them all... : )
This is an easy recommendation, and an easy thing to get addicted to. You've been warned.

Short but necessary part of any digital comics collection Apr 13, 2008
By Sean Hoade GIT really did a fine job with these comic collections. Too bad Marvel is now going totally online and won't let anyone have the actual comics in hand anymore. *sigh* Oh, well -- but if you can get it used (or from GIT), go for it. It's definitely worth the money!
