This program is pretty darn cool. I got this for my 11 year old son who will be starting Mandarin at school in a few weeks. He played with this for the first time last night and in about 30 minutes could count from 1-20 in Chinese. You connect a headset with microphone to the laptop and the program records your voice as you repeat the lessons. You can then listen back to your voice and compare it to the instructor voice. This is critical since intonation is so important in the Mandarin language. There are quite a few games too that make learning fun.

I love this software.It's easy to use and comes with alot of features.Has a printable dictionary can be changed to the language of your choice.Fun language games including Out to Dinner & Lottery Numbers.I love the Recording feature that allows you to compare your speech to native speakers.It also has audio lessons for your iPod or MP3 player.Comes with a bonus Multilingual Video Phrase Book disc.If your looking for software to help you learn chinese this is a great one.

It is a decent product. I arrived in Taipei a few weeks ago and it helped me learn the basics: numbers, hello, thank you, etc. However, the games are tame and the accents are more geared for mainland China. It is not a substitute for an actual class but it is a good place to start before your plane leaves.

Brought it with me to Taiwan. Friends there could not understand the pronunciation from the dictionary. Plus, the words used in the software are not common. Their opinion - "If you use those words people will figure out what you mean, but they don't speak that way." Also, the two voices saying the words were pronouncing some words differently from each other. However, having the audio pronunciation guide is essential compared to a written phonetic one because of the tonal system.

I had been considering Rosetta Stone but the steep price was scary since I was not sure just how committed I or my two girls would be to learing the language once we started. Instant Immersion was cheap enough to risk the expieriment and so far seems to be adequate. Make sure the computer you intend to use with this program has a high screen reso though...our netbook does not and we had to use a secondary laptop to run the program. Zai jian!
