Not at all what I expected.... Feb 13, 2010
I wanted to learn more Thai in my spare time, so I bought this software and Talk More so I could learn and practice in my spare time. I have only used this once, and must say I was more than a little disappointed.
I know some words in Thai, and how to say things like hello, how are you, etc. While the software does use the correct words, they do not use the correct form. Polite usage in Thai always has a krab (male) or kha (female) as the end to a sentence, and this was neither said, nor even briefly talked about in the first lesson. They said sawasdee for hello, when to say it politely, you would say sawasdeekrab. (I am male) This struck me as a very basic mistake, and may be covered somewhere later.
The second thing that struck me is that the basic words are more for Western travelers than Thai people.
The third thing that bothers me, and this is my main complaint, is there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the words they choose. Basic 'words' include sentences like "where is the mens/ladies room?" and other sentences, that while nice to know, should not be in a basic words list. There does not seem to be a progression to the software. It is rather more like a talking dictionary than a language learning aid, except you can't look up words based on sound or spelling. Basic words to me are things like animals (and they should be common to Thailand. e.g. buffalo, duck), food, body parts, etc. and should be grouped together.
The fourth thing is that I installed the software, but each time I wish to use it, I have to put the disk in the CD drawer. I have 2 TB of disk space, so the software SHOULD have installed on my hard drive. It did not.
I guess I expect too much from a $20 software title, but this is so basic and so badly grouped, I am not at all sure it was not a total waste of money. I will try to use it for a while and see if I can discover how they consider this a language learning aid and update this review as needed. I WILL learn Thai, I am just not sure how much this software will help.
