 Not as Extensive Vocabulary and Features as Claimed Jul 02, 2011

I really hate to bust on an American-made product, but this one fell far short of my expectations.
First, the product description is way off. This product does *not* contain an MP3 player, have an SD slot, or a rechargeable battery.
Second, the CD that comes with it has badly outdated software that-- in my case-- wants to map my keyboard to French. It kindly offered me an upgrade for much more money than I cared to pay.
Third, it claims to have a dictionary of 4,000,000 words. I won't doubt that, but it must mean it contains 4,000,000 words across *all* of the many languages it supports. It falls far short of being useful even for a high school French class. (If you want to look up "taxi," you'll be fine. If you want to look up "ramer" -- to row a boat-- you won't find it in there.)
Ectaco has much better translators. Don't waste your money on this one.

The unit is what it is advertised to be. However, it is difficult to view and navigate through the options. The operating instructions are not clear and the use is not intuitive. Better units are available for a lower price.

I was looking for a gift for a friend who will be taking a cruise that stops in 3 countries. This was the perfect item to accompany a language-challenged adult. It has words and phrases in 11 languages including the three areas on the cruise: Spain, Italy, and France. It also came with a CD of additonal phrases which hasn't been tried as yet, but the translator is easy to use, and fun to practice with. For some reason I thought it would be black, and I think I would have liked it a little better if it had been. However, having a white, pocket-sized dictionary is not a reason to be concerned! I'll know more about its workability after the trip!
